Tama L. Mathews

Nov 16, 1944 — Sep 26, 2026

Hyrum

Tama Larsen Mathews passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at her home in Hyrum, Utah surrounded by her family. She was the fourth of five children born to Lloyd and Arlene (Nielsen) Larsen of Hyrum.

Tama lived her entire life in Hyrum, attending Lincoln Elementary School and graduating from South Cache High School. Tama was gifted with a beautiful singing voice and sang often at church and school events with her younger sister Penny. Tama was also a talented pianist and played both the piano and organ. Growing up in Hyrum, Tama worked hard with her parents and siblings on the family farm.

After high school, Tama married Lynn Mathews of Providence, Utah on August 2, 1963 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were soon blessed with a daughter (Tammy) followed by three sons (Cody, Bart and Flint). Lynn and Tama spent their life raising mink in Providence and then moving the ranch to Hyrum. Tama worked hard at the ranch alongside Lynn. He was a true provider of the family, not only doting on her but making sure that she was always taken care of and never went without. In addition to hard work on the ranch, Tama was a homemaker and loved to cook. Lynn and Tama recently celebrated their 63rd Wedding Anniversary.

Tama was a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings in the church but her favorite was primary teacher.

Some of Tama’s favorite things are plain M&M candies which she always had an abundant supply of and shared with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved holidays and especially the 4th and 24th of July holidays and lighting up the city of Hyrum with fireworks to which the community came to watch. Family parties on holidays were another of her favorite activities and many times included a roasted hog and a buffet of food. Other memorable times were spent up Blacksmith Fork Canyon camping with family, traveling with Lynn in their motor home and fishing.

Tama was a sports enthusiast and she and Lynn were consistent Utah State University supporters and season ticket holders to football and basketball games for over 60 years, rarely ever missing a game at home or a televised away game. Many times they even traveled with the team to games.

Tama is survived by her husband Lynn Mathews, daughter Tammy Mathews, and son’s Cody (Colette) Mathews and Flint Mathews along with 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Bart Mathews and her parents Lloyd and Arlene Larsen and all her siblings: Dixie, Jolene, Burke, and Penny.

Tama was a very private person and as per her request, a graveside service was held for family members at Hyrum City Cemetery.
