Verlene Hayward Beck

October 2, 1933 — January 24, 2025

Bountiful

Verlene Hayward Beck, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and educator, passed away surrounded by family on January 24, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on October 2, 1933, in Provo, Utah, to Aldin and Etta Olevia Johansen Hayward, Verlene was the third of six daughters. Known for her kindness, strength, and unwavering faith, she spent her life teaching, mentoring, and caring for those around her.

Growing up in Bountiful, Verlene learned the value of hard work and service, traits that guided her throughout her life. As a child she cherished family gatherings, especially the holidays, where laughter and love filled her home. She also had a deep love for learning, excelling in school and earning a college degree from the University of Utah where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She also contributed to the University newspaper and took part in a transformative European tour with her sisters, an adventure that left lasting memories and lifelong friendships.

Verlene married Wallace Even Beck on August 25, 1955, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together, they built a loving home and raised seven of their nine children. Two of their children passed away before and shortly after birth. She was a dedicated mother who always found joy in her children's achievements, teaching them with patience, unconditional love, and an unwavering belief in their potential. Nothing made her happier than supporting her children and grandchildren in various sports and activities.

Her professional life as an educator spanned over 50 years, where she touched countless lives. Verlene’s love for reading and books was contagious, and she always made sure her children and grandchildren had a rich library to explore. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in various church callings, including Primary President and Relief Society Counselor. Verlene was deeply involved in her community, especially through her long membership in the Altiora Club.

She is survived by her children: Wallace Evan Beck Jr. (Tori), Cinthie Beck Schroeder (Brad), Todd Patrick Beck (Janeen), Jennifer Beck Bearnson (Michael), and Bradley Aldin Beck (Jessica), as well as 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, as well as her sister Gayle Bailey. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wally, sons Shawn, Christopher, Michael and Brian Beck, grandson Brock Beck and four sisters, Elaine, Aldene, Ilene, and Shauna.

Verlene’s legacy of love, service, and devotion to family will continue to inspire all who knew her. We are forever grateful for the example she set, and she will be deeply missed.
